Lands & Natural Resources Department
With a land entitlement of 12.5 million acres, Doyon, Limited is the largest private landowner in Alaska and one of the largest private landowners in North America. These lands were selected by Doyon under terms of the federal Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA).
The active pursuit of balanced and responsible natural resources development on Doyon lands is one of Doyon's major activities.
The main goals of Doyon's land management and resource development programs are:
- Obtain clear title to ANCSA lands
- Promote traditional shareholder uses
- Generate income from natural resource development to enhance company-wide profitability
- Create natural resource development related training and employment opportunities for shareholders
Over the past 25 years Doyon has entered into a number of exploration ventures to determine mineral development potential on Doyon lands. In addition to precious and base metals exploration, Doyon's natural resources program includes sand, gravel and quarry rock sales. Doyon is also involved in development of oil, gas and coal resources, as well as forestry.
Doyon's natural resource development activities have:
- Enhanced the understanding of economic development opportunities on Doyon lands
- Assisted Doyon in setting ANCSA land conveyance priorities
- Produced substantial revenues
- Created shareholder employment and training opportunities
- Funded shareholder higher education opportunities
