18th Annual Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic This Month
The two-day 18th annual Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic tees off with the skills tournament on summer solstice, June 21, 2018, at the Chena Bend Golf Course on Fort Wainwright military base near Fairbanks. The tournament, focused on the theme “Hitting the Green for Greatness,” will begin with a skills tournament and annual Calcutta on Thursday, followed by the golf classic on Friday, June 22.
The annual event is Doyon Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year and provides funding for the Morris Thompson competitive scholarship fund. Since the golf classic’s inception in 2000, the fund has awarded competitive scholarships totaling over $428,180 to Doyon shareholders and shareholder descendants pursuing higher education degrees full-time.
The event is held in memory of Doyon, Limited’s longest-serving president, Morris Thompson, who led Doyon from 1985 – 2000. Thompson, from Tanana, was one of Alaska’s most prominent business leaders – as an Alaska Native leader, corporate leader and political leader. He was known for using his wit, values and wisdom to heal, unite and lead. His lifelong commitment to bringing all Alaskans together in progress and prosperity made him a true bridge between cultures.
