Denakkanaaga Annual Elders and Youth Conference
Several hundred people, young and old, gathered in Anvik June 2 – 4 for the annual Denakkanaaga Elders and Youth Conference. The theme of this year’s conference was “Gitri’ingithchagg, Together as One, Embracing the Past, Present and Future.”
Elders and youth met daily in the Anvik Tribal Hall to listen to remarks from 1st Traditional Chief Don Honea, 2nd Traditional Chief Trimble Gilbert, Anvik Traditional Chief Carl Jerue, and representatives from Denakkanaaga, Tanana Chiefs Conference and Doyon, Limited. Attendees also heard reports and discussed issues important to the elders and youth of Interior Alaska.
Three resolutions were passed at the meeting, including B.R. 2015-02: Exoneration of the Fairbanks Four, B.R. 2015-03: Elders Call for Love and Protection of Alaska Native Children, and B.R. 2015-04: Tribal Impact on Federal and State Fishing and Hunting Regulatory Meetings.
“The community of Anvik was a beautiful place to host this year’s Denakkanaaga conference,” said Aaron Schutt, Doyon president and CEO. “Anvik’s residents were welcoming and put on a great meeting.”
