Fairbanks to Host 2016 AFN Convention
50 Years: Reflect. Refresh. Renew.
Fifty years ago, the first Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) convention was held in Fairbanks, Alaska. Fifty years later, AFN will again hold its annual convention in the Golden Heart City. The theme for this year’s convention, which will take place from October 20 – 22, is “50 Years: Reflect. Refresh. Renew.”
In a coordinated effort to make AFN guests feel welcomed to the Golden Heart City of Alaska, community organizers including Explore Fairbanks, Denakkanaaga, Doyon, Limited, Fairbanks Native Association, Interior Regional Housing Authority, Tanana Chiefs Conference and numerous volunteers are busy planning a welcome potlatch. They are also organizing information about air and ground transportation, lodging and meeting facilities; public relations and advertising; fundraising; and addressing opportunities to promote health and safety.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming our guests to the Interior for the 2016 AFN convention,” said Geri Simon, Doyon’s senior vice president of administration and AFN Fairbanks’ Native Leadership and Community Committee co-chair. “We couldn’t be happier with AFN’s decision to hold their convention in Fairbanks and for the opportunity to show them our hospitality.”
