Graduate Reception Celebrates Class of 2019
Doyon Foundation’s 2019 Graduate Reception celebrated the Class of 2019 with an inspiring line-up of speakers, graduate introductions and a performance by the Troth Yeddha’ dance group on May 10 at the Doyon, Limited Chiefs Court in Fairbanks.
The Foundation hosts the annual event each spring to celebrate the hard work and incredible accomplishments of Foundation scholarship recipients who are at the end of one important journey and getting ready to start on the next.
Rev. Anna Frank, the event’s special Elder speaker, opened the reception with a prayer and short address. Frank recently received an honorary doctor of laws from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF).
The Foundation’s executive director, Doris Miller, and board president, Lanien Livingston, thanked donors, highlighted opportunities to get involved with the Foundation, such as at the upcoming Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic, discussed the types of Foundation scholarships available, encouraged alumni to get in touch, and provided an update on the Foundation’s language revitalization program before introducing alumni speakers, Aaron and Ethan Schutt. Aaron serves as the president and CEO of Doyon, Limited, and Ethan is the chief of staff at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.
Reception guests then heard from the 2019 graduate speaker, Janessa Newman, of Rampart, who graduated in May from UAF with her bachelor’s of biological sciences.
Graduates in attendance had the opportunity to introduce themselves to the audience, and the event concluded with a performance by the talented Troth Yeddha’ dancers.
