Message to Shareholders
We are already six months into our fiscal year with the closeout of March. It’s hard to believe how quickly the first half of the year went. We just wrapped up our annual meeting of shareholders on March 15 in Fairbanks. We elected four board members, gave a financial report on fiscal year 2018, and awarded three individuals with Shareholder of the Year Awards.
I am happy to report that we ended the board election with a quorum of 60 percent. That was slightly lower than last year’s quorum number, but we are very pleased all the same, given that we have had two strong years after a long-term declining trend in voter participation. Thank you to each of the shareholders who took the time to vote in the election. I hope that the quorum number continues to increase in the years to come.
The results of the board election saw three returning members, Jerry Isaac, Sonta Hamilton-Roach and Miranda Wright, and one new member, Betty Huntington. Congratulations to each of them. I also want to say thank you to outgoing board member Brian Ridley for his service to Doyon and its shareholders.
The theme for this year’s annual meeting was Remember the Past. Inspire the Future. With this in mind, we chose Emil Notti as our keynote speaker. Emil was the first president of AFN, active in the land claims movement, integral in the negotiation of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, and served as Doyon’s third president. His address delivered lessons of history, perseverance, dedication and vision. He left the audience inspired and in awe of all he and many others did for Alaska Natives and for Doyon.
At the annual meeting, we also presented three shareholders with Shareholder of the Year Awards. Sheree Titus was presented with the Chief Andrew Isaac Leadership Award, Tanna Carter with the Richard Frank Military Service Award and Roy Nictune with the Poldine Carlo Citizen of the Year Award. These three leaders are excellent examples of the positive things our shareholders are doing for our country, our state and our people.
Finally, I want to say that it was great to see so many of our shareholders at the Tanana Chiefs Conference convention and at our annual meeting. As I have shared before, it is always a privilege for me to visit with you, answer your questions and address your concerns. Thank you for your continued support.
