Exploration of the east Wiseman area, located adjacent to the Dalton Highway in the Brooks Range (see regional map), has identified over fifteen significant occurrences of precious metal- bearing polymetallic mineralization in the Chandalar Copper Belt (Figure 1). Types of mineralization present include: volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS), copper skarn, and porphyry copper. Drilling of the more advanced prospects could define VMS deposits like Arctic in the Western Brooks Range (37 million tons at 4.0% copper, 0.8% lead, 5.5% zinc, 1.5 oz/ton silver, and 0.02 oz/ton gold) and porphyry-related copper skarns with a significant gold credit similar to Carr Fork in Utah (80 million tons at 2.2% copper and 0.02 oz/ton gold).
At the Luna Prospect (Figure 2) VMS mineralization occurs in calcareous quartz-sericite and chlorite schist (felsic to intermediate metavolcanic rocks) along a strike length of over two miles. Three of five shallow drill holes and a channel sample intersect mineralization ranging from 2.2 feet grading 1.9% copper and 1% zinc to 30 feet assaying 3.4% copper, 3.1% zinc, 1.2 oz/ton silver, and 0.01 oz/ton gold.
EVELYN LEE PROSPECT AND VENUS SKARN PROSPECTS
At the Evelyn Lee Prospect (Figure 3), copper skarn mineralization is localized above a porphyry system. Copper soil geochemistry and mineralized talus indicate widespread skarn mineralization with a possible cumulative strike length of over 7,500 feet. Two shallow drill holes (18-23 feet) intersected 18 feet grading 2% copper and 23 feet assaying 3.5% copper, both holes bottomed in mineralization. A seven-foot channel sample in the same area returned 9.9% copper and 8.17 oz/ton silver. Limited assaying suggests a gold content for the mineralization in the range of 0.01 to 0.08 oz/ton and a silver content of between 1 and 3 oz/ton.
Copper skarn mineralization at the Venus Prospect (Figure 4) occurs around the margin of a mineralized porphyry (0.15% copper based on three drill holes). Channel samples of the skarn mineralization include: 20 feet at 5.3% copper, 2.2 oz/ton silver, and 0.026 oz/ton gold; 2 feet grading 7.12% copper, 2.54 oz/ton silver, and .13 oz/ton gold; and 6 feet assaying 1.47% copper and 0.003 oz/ton gold. The copper soil geochemistry suggests multiple mineralized zones with strike lengths to over 1,600 feet. Based on the sampling and limited drilling to date both Evelyn Lee and Venus offer the potential to define large bodies of high grade skarn-hosted copper mineralization with a significant gold credit.
