Shareholder Spotlight: Winnie Atwood
A voice for Elders and a role model who holds her Native culture and heritage true is how some would describe Winnie Atwood. Atwood raised a large family – 12 children – passing her Native values onto each child. As her children grew, she made sure that they participated in sports and lived an active lifestyle with their family in Nenana. She could often be spotted at potlatches or cooking and organizing fundraising efforts for families in need. She was known as the “moose head soup maker.” Her faith in God is strong; forgiving all and having an open door for those in need.
At age 87, Atwood enjoys sewing and traveling. Her advice to others is “…look into your [family] history – no matter how much Indian you are, whether it’s a tablespoon or a gallon, you have those memories of being an Indian from your ancestors.”
