Sustainability Spotlight: Battery Recycling
It’s time to get serious about recycling batteries! Each year, approximately 2.9 billion batteries are thrown in the trash in the United States. This causes a significant negative impact on the natural environment, as materials like lead, cadmium, and mercury can poison people and animals and contaminate soil and water.
Benefits of Battery Recycling:
- Recycling batteries will reduce waste sent to landfills and incinerators.
- Responsibly recycling batteries can save natural resources.
- New jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries can be created by increased recycling.
- Prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials.
Types of Batteries to Recycle:
Alkaline – a fire hazard if not disposed of properly
Lithium – potential fire hazard in landfills
Button – contain valuable metals to recycle
Lead-acid car batteries – among the most dangerous batteries
What is Doyon Doing?
