Doyon Foundation brought together athletes, families, and community members from across Alaska for the 2026 North American Basketball Tournament, held March 11–14 at Lathrop High School. The four-day event celebrated Alaska Native and American Indian athletes while highlighting the power of sport, culture, and community connection.
Games ran daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with attendees enjoying raffles, concessions, and merchandise throughout the tournament. Doyon Foundation’s language department engaged youth by distributing free coloring and activity booklets, while Careline Crisis Services provided resources and support for individuals and families.
Teams traveled from across the state, showcasing exceptional skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The gym was filled with energy as fans cheered on their teams, creating an atmosphere that strengthened community ties through a shared love of basketball.
Tournament champions included:
- Women’s 18+: Forever Myah
- Men’s 18+: Fairbanks
- Men’s 35+: Hog River Construction
The event raised nearly $30,000 to support Doyon Foundation’s core programs, including scholarships, workforce development, and language revitalization initiatives.
Student volunteers from Effie Kokrine Charter School and Lathrop High School played a key role in the tournament’s success. Through their efforts, they gained hands-on experience in customer service, teamwork, and event operations while earning proceeds for their school programs.
“This tournament wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of our sponsors, volunteers, and the dedicated staff of the Doyon Foundation,” said Executive Director Mariah Pitka.
The North American Basketball Tournament continues to serve as more than a sporting event—it is a longstanding community tradition that fosters connection, supports education, and celebrates cultural strength across the Doyon region.
