Every word spoken in Native languages is a celebration of resilience and a vital link to ancestors. This May, in partnership with Effie Kokrine, the Doyon Foundation Language Revitalization Program is proud to host its first-ever Dena Language Spelling Bee. This inaugural event celebrates Denaakk’e and Lower Tanana Benhti’. The program is beginning with these two languages, with a vision to grow and eventually bring all Doyon Region languages to the stage in the years to come.

The upcoming event follows in the footsteps of the statewide Yup’ik and Iñupiaq Spelling Bee, a grassroots movement that has inspired Alaska for over a decade. The Foundation is excited to bring that same spirit of pride and excellence to Interior communities.

A Contest Where Everyone Stays in the Game

The goal is to build confidence, not stress. The Dena Spelling Bee uses a points-based system that keeps the focus on growth rather than perfection. Instead of “sudden death” elimination, students participate in multiple rounds, earning points for every correct letter and word. A single mistake never ends the day; instead, every participant has the opportunity to remain on stage, showcase their hard work, and—most importantly—have fun.

Ways to Get Involved

This is more than a competition—it is a community gathering. Whether a fluent speaker, language learner, or proud supporter, there is something for everyone:

  • The Main Stage: Watch talented students showcase their hard work and language knowledge in a live spelling contest.
  • Student Art Showcase: Experience the creativity of youth through special art displays and traditional subsistence projects.
  • Support the Mission: Participate in fundraising opportunities that directly benefit the future of the Language Program.

For Students: Challenge Yourself

  • Get Ready: In February, the official 150-word list and a special Preparation Journal were released to support study efforts. Hard copies of the journal are available at the Doyon Foundation office, and digital copies can be accessed on the website.
  • Study Tools: Students can tune in to radio spots on KUAC and log in to DLO lessons designed to help master the words and their meanings.
  • Join the Legacy:  Every participant helps the languages grow. Students in grades 6–12 who would like to participate in the Spelling Bee are encouraged to sign up by April 17, 2026, using the registration link.
