Kantishna Roadhouse Recertified for Adventure Green Alaska Sustainable Tourism Program
The Alaska Tourism Industry Association (ATIA) has once again recognized Kantishna Roadhouse for its commitment to sustainable tourism, renewing its Adventure Green Alaska (AGA) certification! The recertification reaffirms Kantishna Roadhouse’s commitment to responsible operations and the protection of Alaska’s cultural and natural resources.
The AGA certification, Alaska’s only sustainability-focused tourism program, is a voluntary initiative that recognizes tourism businesses that meet rigorous standards of environmental stewardship, community engagement, and economic sustainability. Kantishna Roadhouse, located deep within Denali National Park and Preserve, has maintained its status as a leader in sustainable tourism since its inception in 1996.
“We are honored to receive this certification and proud of our team for embedding sustainability into every aspect of our operation,” said Jordan Sanford, President of Doyon Tourism. “Our values are rooted in the respect for the land, our ancestors, and the communities we serve. At Kantishna Roadhouse, we carry forward a deep tradition of stewardship and storytelling. This certification affirms our commitment to sharing Alaska in a way that honors our culture, protects our environment, and creates meaningful connections for every visitor.”
In 2018, the facility earned gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. As part of that achievement, the team implemented a comprehensive recycling program, upgraded to energy-efficient lighting and low-flow fixtures, and prioritized the use of non-toxic cleaning products.
The recertification also acknowledges Kantishna Roadhouse’s continued efforts in the following areas:
- Supporting the local economy by sourcing supplies from nearby vendors
- Using post-consumer recycled materials whenever possible
- Offering Athabascan cultural presentations to educate visitors
- Managing food, yard, and solid waste responsibly
- Maintaining a successful recycling program and green cleaning practices
The renewed AGA certification serves as a public affirmation of Kantishna Roadhouse’s enduring mission: to protect the land, honor Alaska Native culture, and offer meaningful experiences to visitors for generations to come.
