Jean Evans Stevens was born in Alatna, Alaska on March 31, 1929 and left her earthly life on June 4, 2024. Her parents were Clara Tobuk Evans and Wilfred Joseph Evans, Sr. Jean’s mother passed away when Jean was 15 months old. Catherine Pitka became her stepmother in 1931 until she passed away in 1947. Jean’s maternal grandparents were Dinook and Duvak of Alatna. Her paternal grandparents were Julia Netlurtatlno of Bishop Mountain and John Wilfred Evans of Koyukuk.

Jean lived in Allakaket, Evansville, and Fairbanks. She had eight children, Jonathan Moses, Myrtle Beham, Catherine Lucy Edwardsen, Gary Stevens, Robert Stevens, Alisa Mae Stevens, Sheryl Meierotto, and Brett Lee Stevens.

Jean loved to ride her snowmachine and run her boat on the Koyukuk river. She was a renowned skin sewer, bead worker, rock collector, and she loved to dance. She was a very independent woman who lived her life to the fullest. She made an everlasting impact on everyone she met.

Jean retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 39 years of service in the Bettles Field Post Office and moved to Fairbanks following the birth of her granddaughter MyricaGale Meierotto in 2007.

Jean broke her hip in 2018 and continued to live at home until April of 2019 when she moved into Assisted Living. She was a lively addition to the two ASL homes she lived in. The other residents and her caregivers enjoyed her stories and her laughter.

Jean passed away at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital on June 4, 2024 after a short, but serious bout with a lung infection. When her time came to pass from this world, she was listening to one of her favorite songs by Patsy Cline, “Walking After Midnight,” with her daughter Sheryl by her side. We know that she felt the love that surrounded her from those that visited her during the two days she was in the hospital.

Jean is survived by her sister Marian Van Horne, her daughters Catherine Lucy (Ray), Sheryl (Jeff), Alisa Mae, her sons Jonathan, Gary (Lucy), and Robert, her grandchildren Michelle Moses, Charlotte Moses, Johnni Moses, Sonja Ahern, Stephanie Harris, Frances Law, Nicole Childers, Jenevie Burgess, Natasha Williams (David Douthit), Tara Williams, Alexander Stevens, Summer Stevens, Brandon Stevens, Alisa Marie Stevens, Joseph Chow, Nathan Camacho, Christopher Camacho (Ashley), and MyricaGale Meierotto. Jean is also survived by her dear nieces Cathy Thoemmes, Brenda Sullivan, Barbara Marquez, Deborah Mccullah, Sheryl Duson, Asa Evans and her dear nephew William King. She also has 30 great and great-great grandchildren and many wonderful cousins.

Jean is predeceased by her parents, her brothers John, Andrew, Gerald, Junior, and Ralph, her sisters Florence, Millicent, Myrtle, and Josephine, her daughter Myrtle, and her son Brett Lee.

At a later date Jean’s cremains will be laid to rest in Evansville next to her daughter Myrtle and her son Brett Lee.
