Nicholas Snow, the son of Pete and Evelyn Snow of McGrath, Alaska, and grandson of Lucy Whitley of Holy Cross, Alaska, is a cornerstone of the McGrath community. Known for stepping up to handle the many unseen yet vital tasks that keep the village running smoothly, Snow is the one people call on when a grave needs to be dug, regardless of the ground’s frozen state. Always quick to lend a helping hand, Snow assists the village’s elders and community members, whether it’s with repairs or general assistance. He is known for his skills as a handyman, offering help without hesitation, no matter how harsh the temperatures are.
In the summer, Snow builds a large community garden, providing a resource for others and encouraging the spirit of sharing. He reminds everyone to “leave some for others” while ensuring fresh vegetables reach families in Nikolai, strengthening the bonds between the two communities. Snow also carries on the tradition of setting a fish net beneath the ice during winter, harvesting whitefish to distribute to those in need.
Beyond his everyday acts of service, Snow is a dedicated volunteer firefighter and EMT, reflecting his steadfast commitment to the safety and well-being of the people of McGrath. His actions make him a central and invaluable figure in the village, embodying selflessness and service to others.
